Do I have to subscribe annually?

Commercial licenses of CAD Exchanger are perpetual, which means that annual subscription is optional. Active subscription grants the access to all updates and releases. After the subscription expiration you will stay at the latest available version. Further updates will require re-purchasing the license. Therefore, keeping on-going subscription is the most cost-effective way to benefit from CAD Exchanger.

What is node-locked license?

Node-locked license is designed for individual users and tied to a single seat via physical address.

What is site-wide license?

Site-wide license allows to install and simultaneously run CAD Exchanger on unlimited number of machines within single domain.

My application doesn’t recognize the license anymore. Why did this happen?

CAD Exchanger license is tied to a MAC address of one of the network devices present on the machine, and during online activation CAD Exchanger tries its best to select a MAC address of a real network device that is unlikely to be unplugged. If the license is not recognisable by the application it most likely happened because PC configuration has been changed.

How much does CAD Exchanger cost?

Technical

What CAD formats are supported?

The list of supported formats can be found here. We constantly working on adding new formats to our list, so if you could not find the format of your interest, please let us know at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

What file size limitations does CAD Exchanger have?

There are no predefined limitations of the file size. It depends on many variables, such as your working environment, hardware characteristics and what file formats do you use for the conversion. For example, if you are trying to convert mesh format to BRep only format it will require much more RAM, than a conversion to a different mesh format. It also depends on how complex is the model's geometry. With the growing complexity of the model it might get quite challenging for CAD Exchanger to handle a conversion in some corner cases.

How fast is CAD Exchanger?

It is a matter of file size and model complexity. For most medium to large models import should be from fraction of to seconds (or dozens of seconds for complex models). CAD Exchanger intensively utilizes parallel computations and we hold two patents in that regard.

Is internet access required?

CAD Exchanger GUI does not require the internet access to operate. Internet connection is only required to activate the product via automated mechanism (offline activation is also possible).

Can I run CAD Exchanger in a virtual environment?

CAD Exchanger normally won’t run on virtual machine. The matter of the fact is that CAD Exchanger requires OpenGL 2.1 or later (please see system requirements) and virtual machines do not enable that. Thus, please use direct (not virtual) environment.

That 3D CAD file won’t open in CAD Exchanger. What do I do?

There is no single standard for 3D data. Every CAD systems use its own algorithms to compose 3D files. Therefore, sometimes errors may occur. Please send us the troublesome files for our analysis at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. In most cases we are able to assist, or find the root case of the problem.

I’ve got an issue with some specific file, but I cannot send it to you.

Whenever a user encounters any issue, we ask to provide us with some reproducers, so we could investigate it on our side (e.g., files that failed to be imported or exported). However, it is not always possible due to the large file size or privacy terms.

In that case, you can collect log data, which might be helpful for us in triaging the issue.

You have to run CAD Exchanger with logging enabled. In order to do so you can use a script which sets required environment variables and then runs CAD Exchanger GUI or do the same manually through the terminal.

For Windows:

  1. Open the terminal or CAD Exchanger Command Line Interface (in the Start menu).
  2. Navigate to the CAD Exchanger installation directory (e.g cd C:/Program Files/CAD Exchanger/bin/). If you choose using CAD Exchanger Command Line Interface, you don’t need to change directory.
  3. Set required environment variables in order to enable logging:
    set CADEX_DEBUG=1
    set CADEX_LOGGER_LEVEL=0
    set CADEX_LOG_FILE=%USERPROFILE%/Documents/log.txt
  4. Run CAD Exchanger with command Exchanger and then try to reproduce the issue. Once it is done, close CAD Exchanger and you will find a “log.txt” file in your "Documents" directory. Please, share it with us.

For Mac:

  1. First, you need to run terminal
  2. Navigate to the folder containing CAD Exchanger application: cd
  3. "/Applications/CAD Exchanger.app/Contents/MacOS/".
  4. Set required environment variables in order to enable logging:
    export CADEX_DEBUG=1
    export CADEX_LOGGER_LEVEL=0
    export CADEX_LOG_FILE="/Users/${USER}/Desktop/log.txt"
  5. Run CAD Exchanger with command ./Exchanger and then try to reproduce the issue. Once it is done, close CAD Exchanger and you will find a log file on your desktop.

For Linux:

  1. First, you need to run terminal
  2. Navigate to the folder containing CAD Exchanger application.
  3. Set required environment variables in order to enable logging:
    export CADEX_DEBUG=1
    export CADEX_LOGGER_LEVEL=0
    export CADEX_LOG_FILE="/Users/${USER}/Desktop/log.txt".
  4. Run CAD Exchanger with command ExchangeGUI.sh and then try to reproduce the issue. Once it is done, close CAD Exchanger and you will find a log file on your desktop.
